Pancake Day race : Defending Champions do it again!

The annual Pancake Day race held on the beach at Burton Bradstock took place yesterday with five teams taking part.

Now in its third year, teams came from across the local area to compete for the Golden Pan Trophy. The five teams were from Greenpeace, the Jurassic Coast, the History Girls, the National Trust and our own team, the Hive Beach Café.

A group of supporters gathered round the teams on the beach as the 10.30 deadline approached while others watched from the café patio. There was some jostling on the starting line as Caroline Richards, Outdoor Experience Manager (NT) explained the rules concerning no pushing, no shoving and tossing the pancakes whilst running. Most of the teams seemed to play by the rules, being more worried about completing the course without falling over or dropping their pancakes. The course this year was 25m along the beach, round Bob from the National Trust who was acting as the end-marker, and back to the starting line. Each team had 4 members, so four legs were run.

From early on it was the Hive, who set the pace, although the Jurassic Coast team gave them a real race this year, champing at their heels the entire time. As the legs played out, and the runners legs got tired, the teams spread out across the course, and on the final leg it was a two horse race, with the Hive and the Jurassic Coast teams running almost neck and neck.

On the final leg, Tim Attrill (HBC) sprinted out of the starting blocks and went for it, closely chased by Sam Scrivens (JC), but Tim was first over the line. Once again the Hive Beach Café won the title for the third time. Congratulations to all the teams who took part and to Caroline who organised the event.

It was a good turnout from all the teams and everyone retired to the café for a cup of hot chocolate and a pancake to retell their morning’s adventures.
