View from … the Hive Beach Kitchen

Exciting times ahead for the Café & kitchen with the launch of Silver Dreams!

The Hive Beach Cafe recently purchased Silver Dreams, a 1960’s retro mobile catering trailer with the view to cater outside events, so whether it’s for providing catering for films, birthday parties, weddings, events, festivals or any special occasion, then look out for our sleek Silver trailer!

Silver Dreams Mobile Catering VanSilver Dreams will have its first outing at the Eat Dorset Food Festival at Parnham House- 13 & 14 October, where we will be cooking Lobster and Steak Ciabatta ‘s, Griddled Scallops & King Prawns, all washed down with champagne cocktails which we’ll be serving  from the van.  So come and join us and tell us what you think of our out latest addition.

With Autumn now upon us, the weather and sea changes which means that the summer fish that have been so abundant this year change, and the colder water fish start to come in to their prime.

We recently changed our ever popular Tempura Fish & Chips from Cod to Hake fillet which has had a really good response. Hake is a really nice fish, has a great texture and a nicer flavour to Cod we feel, so well worth a try.

Fish now in or coming into season are;

  • Black Bream
  • Sea Bass
  • Squid
  • Brill
  • Skate
  • Pollock
  • Haddock
  • Turbot
  • Grey Mullet
  • Red Mullet
  • Scallops
  • Oyster
  • Crabs
  • Lobsters

Other fish we’ve had that have been good include some splendid Plaice from fishing boat Valeron off West Bay. They’re so good, that we simply grill them with Cornish sea salt and olive oil…delicious.  Good Landings of Dover Sole and some nice John Dory.

And with Christmas fast approaching, don’t miss out on our Christmas menu! Booking is essential.  Our menu was launched in August and we took our first booking before the August Bank holiday which was very exciting….

Happy cooking and eating from Barry, Tim & Giles

I have never made a comment on any business in my life but the demise of the Hive at Burton Bradstock is a crime…
I hate to see a good business slide … It used to be a place with a great view and location and good food …. thank god it is still in the same location.
Now a very hit and miss place.
If you go on a Thursday you can only get fish and chips with a third rate mini bit of salad … no mush peas … if you buy the normal dish for the 13.00+ you get the same as the 9.00 silver surfer but without the sweet !!!! Joke … Tempura !!
small and very over cooked in thick batter .. a load of chips … and at this moment the rest of the menu is hard to find a meal. Come on HIVE pull up your socks .. get some decent cooks and get back on top of your game ….. or give up.

    Hi Alan,
Thanks for getting in touch re your recent visit to the Hive. I’m sorry to hear that your visit did not meet expectations, and I apologise for that.
The Café is a much loved facility at Hive Beach with a splendid view over Lyme Bay which is still a great as ever, but during these bleak winter days may not always hold the same appeal as it does on sunnier warmer days, but then that’s what makes the Café so eclectic. Every day is different.

As for being ‘hit and miss’, during the recent cold snap the Hive hasn’t been particularly busy but we have been open, serving our ever popular breakfast and varied lunch menu, and then after lunch service, a selection of cakes and drinks.

The chef team work hard to ensure that the menu is varied and produce our signature seasonal fish dishes daily, along with other items, including as an extra on a Tuesday and Thursday, our Silver Surfers meal deal featuring a fish or meat option – two courses for £9.99.

Where possible, we always like to resolve issues like this at the time, so please do come and tell us if something isn’t right and we will do our best to rectify things.

Thank you again for your feedback. We can only improve our customer service if we know what the issues are. I sincerely hope that this has not put you off from visiting us again.

    Kind regards

    Caroline Richards
    Hive Beach Cafe Manager
